Things to Be Careful of in Japanese TV Programs: Pushy Requests
  • Once you succeed in getting yourself a segment on TV, you will soon realize how difficult and time-consuming it is to produce it. The production side will begin to propose things and ask for assistance from you and it can quickly become a tedious and frustrating experience.
  • You may just think that your involvement and dedication merits some favors from the production side. Most common is asking to look at the script or requesting that the producers introduce the company in a certain way. However, the show is the property of the production and to push your own interests onto a TV crew is essentially taboo. One of the things you will have the right to are names, prices, and various numbers that may be associated with the product. Since an error in this information would be significant, make sure to double check with the production side about this.
  • Another common request is to have the footage sent to you.
In most cases, footage that is aired on TV is under the copyright of the broadcasting companies, and they are not allowed to release it to the public. It is better to ask them when the show will air, and then to record it on your own.
  • In the end, TV directors are humans too, and they want to avoid awkward situations. Try to understand what they are trying to do, and allow them to work in a comfortable working environment. This way, you can have more collaborations in the future.
